Palermo man recovers from leukemia, writes song for deceased friend: Giuseppe Ciulla’s story

Hangover, a rap song dedicated to a friend who is no longer here: written in his memory is Giuseppe Ciulla, known as Double G, a 24-year-old man from Palermo, who was cured of leukemia over ten years ago. The bond with Mattia was formed in the hospital in 2008, when the two eight-year-old boys were admitted to the pediatric oncology ward at the Children’s Hospital. Their friendship grew during the long months of therapy, days filled with treatments, the tough ordeal of illness, but also moments of play and lots of laughter.

“We were there for each other – Giuseppe Ciulla says – we always shared the same room, and now that he’s gone, I consider him my guardian angel.” Years later, Giuseppe wanted to dedicate a text and a song to him, created with the help of Aslti, the Sicilian association against leukemia, to honor the memory of Mattia, even managing to contact his parents who now live in Switzerland.

“With the words and music of Hangover – Giuseppe continues – I express my eternal gratitude to Mattia for the importance he had during my illness, keeping his memory alive forever.” Antonella Gugliuzza and Ilde Vulpetti, president and director of the Aslti operating area, comment: “We immediately supported Giuseppe Ciulla’s desire to remember his roommate and friend, knowing how important support is among the hospitalized children and the strong bond that is created during the months spent in the hospital. Recognizing and supporting the emotions that accompany the experience of illness in children and adolescents is an aspect of humanizing hospital care, the mission of our association.”
