Palermo extends waste treatment at Bellolampo site again

Explain in brief the following article

Another extension for the treatment of waste ending up in the Bellolampo landfill in Palermo is needed to allow Rap to implement “special forms of waste management while awaiting a return to normalcy”. The revamping interventions for the TMB (mechanical biological treatment) plant, which started on July 1, 2023, to restore the full efficiency of waste treatment, are not yet completed (on average 850 tons per day). The modernizations of the TMB “will likely be completed by 15 May” as stated in the ordinance signed yesterday by Mayor Roberto Lagalla and Environment Councillor Pietro Alongi. Alternatively, for undifferentiated waste, “mobile crushing and screening systems” will continue to be used.

The goal is a “gradual transition from the current emergency conditions to normality, pending the full functionality restoration of the TMB”. The new ordinance will expire on October 26 of this year but may be suspended if the TMB is “delivered and tested upon completion of the revamping works”. “We are about to close the emergency phase that we have been dragging on for months – says Councillor Alongi – once the TMB is operational, we will have secured Bellolampo at least until 2026. The start of separate waste collection, progressively for 200,000 citizens, will reduce landfill disposal. Bellolampo has welcomed waste from 20 municipalities in recent months following the closure of a facility in Trapani”.
