Norwegian team triumphs in Sferracavallo Melges 32

The Norwegian team of Pippa 2, led by owner and helmsman Lasse Petterson, assisted by Portuguese tactician Alvaro Marinho, clinched the first Melges Grand Prix of the 2024 season held today in the sea of Sferracavallo in Palermo. Perfect racing conditions at the Sferracavallo Sailing Club allowed for all eight races to be completed in a leaderboard that saw Lasse Petterson’s crew defend their number 01 on the bow of their boat, a symbol of their success in the Melges 32 World League circuit last year.

Pippa 2’s victory was built on consistent performance and a decisive overtaking maneuver on the second day against early leader German boat Wilma, skippered by Fritz Homann with Nico Celon on tactics. Today, Wilma tried to close the gap but could only manage to shave off one of the three points that separated them from the top spot, settling for second place. The third spot on the podium also belongs to Germany, with Heat skippered by Max Augustin securing the position on the first day and fending off challenges from competitors. With this result, Heat also claims victory in the Corinthian division. The top five is rounded out by Hungarian boat Farfallina in fourth place and German Fritz Homann Jr. in fifth. The top Italian finisher, in sixth place, is Ra, skippered by Cesare Dell’Aria. The awards ceremony was attended by Palermo’s Tourism and Sports Councilor Alessandro Anello, who expressed gratitude to all the Melges 32 sailors for choosing to bring this prestigious sporting event to Sicily and Sferracavallo, hoping that everyone leaves with wonderful memories of the region.
