Nineteen-year-old dies in Intensive Care after scooter accident

For a month, a boy from Lipari, the nineteen-year-old Jonathan Giannò, who was involved in a terrible scooter accident, fought between life and death. Until today, when his heart stopped beating. He died at the Papardo hospital in Messina, where, immediately after arriving by helicopter, he underwent a delicate surgical operation. And since then he had remained in the Intensive Care Unit. There had also been slight improvements, which gave hope. In the last few days, however, the boy’s condition gradually worsened.

The accident had occurred on the road to Bagnamare, in Lipari. Giannò was coming down from Canneto on his scooter and at the exit of the tunnel he had started to skid, until in one of the curves of Bagnamare he crashed into a pole. It was immediately thought to be a sudden illness. He ended up lying on the ground. Behind him was a young islander, Martina La Greca, who was the first to intervene and seeing him almost lifeless she began to perform a providential heart massage, until he regained consciousness. In the meantime, the alarm went off. A municipal police patrol also arrived and an officer, Salvatore Sarpi, also provided assistance to the boy.

The 118 personnel who arrived with the ambulance transferred the boy to the emergency room of the hospital in Lipari for further checks on the conditions, which immediately appeared serious. The helicopter rescue was requested. For a month, Jonathan remained in the hospital where everything was done to save him. In the churches of Lipari, prayers were also said for the boy. But there was nothing to be done. And now the island of Lipari – with its people – mourns him. The parish priest of the Minor Basilica of Canneto, Alessandro De Gregorio, announced that a holy mass in memory of Jonathan will be celebrated this evening at 7 pm.
