NG appeals against administrative detention for migrants rescued by Mare Jonio: torture victims.
The 58 shipwreck survivors rescued by the Mare Jonio and disembarked yesterday in Porto Empedocle mostly come from countries considered safe by Italy, particularly Bangladesh and Egypt. They are young people ranging in age from 16 to 25, with one person being 35 years old. They have injuries and scars from the torture they endured in Libya. Some of them told rescuers from the NGO that they were returning from peaceful protests in Bangladesh against the new government, where they were labeled as opponents, persecuted, and some even arrested. One of them, after leaving his home country and arriving in Libya, was captured by local traffickers and taken to a detention center where he was tortured for 23 days before being released upon payment of a 7,000 euro bail, with the help of his family. The relatives of another boy, also in Libya, were forced to sell their house in Bangladesh and send 13,000 euros. Others have reported paying up to 20,000 euros to be released from detention camps. The Mare Jonio of Mediterranea Saving Humans, after disembarking the survivors in Porto Empedocle, requested the transfer of the ship to Trapani following an administrative seizure for non-compliance with the Piantedosi decree. “We will appeal against the seizure, our lawyers are already working on it. But before that, we will send the report with the direct testimonies and an initial medical evaluation to the competent institutional and judicial authorities, showing what we encountered when we rescued these people,” said Sheila Melos, mission leader aboard the Mare Jonio ship of Mediterranea Saving Humans.
