New multimedia path to enhance the villages along the Santa Rosalia trail
A new multimedia exhibition route to enhance the Santa Rosalia pilgrimage route, dedicated to the patron saint of Palermo. The project, titled “The villages of the Santa Rosalia pilgrimage”, is promoted by the regional department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity and carried out by the Southern Development Agency.
Multilingual audio guides will narrate to pilgrims and tourists the cultural heritage of the villages along the approximately 200 kilometers from Santo Stefano Quisquina, in the province of Agrigento, to Palermo at the Sanctuary of Monte Pellegrino. Additional information will be provided by roll-up banners in the municipalities with maps of the villages and the history of the route.
The presentation, held this morning, was attended by the regional assessor of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, the Tourism assessor of the city of Palermo Alessandro Anello, the president of the Southern Development Agency Giuseppe Sciarabba, Francesco Rossi, technical director of the Terre Normanne Local Action Group, and Susanna Gristina, president of Kòrai, the managing entity of the pilgrimage route.
“The realization of this multimedia itinerary is part of a series of initiatives promoted by the Cultural Heritage department on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the finding of Santa Rosalia’s relics, for the enhancement of Sicilian identity and cultural heritage of the city,” said the Cultural Heritage assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato. “A tangible testimony of the deep devotion and fervent sentiment that inspire the devotees and faithful of the capital. Through this route, which winds through the inland municipalities of Sicily, we wanted to retrace sacred places and spiritual and cultural testimonies of the protector of Palermo, an eternal symbol of hope.”
“The project is a sign of revival for a religious-cultural route with great tourist potential for the city of Palermo and the inland municipalities of the province,” said the Tourism assessor of the city of Palermo Alessandro Anello. “I thank assessor Scarpinato for promoting the initiative on the 400th anniversary of the Festino. The municipal administration is putting in place many efforts on the Itinerarium Rosaliae to attract new travelers from Italy and abroad, so much so that QR code signage will soon be installed along the approximately 200 kilometers of the route to indicate identity sites, local excellences, events, and useful information on the stages.”
“Thanks to the support of the Cultural Heritage department,” said Giuseppe Sciarabba, president of the Southern Development Agency, “we have implemented an initiative that embraces the philosophy of slow tourism, enhancing the villages of the Santa Rosalia pilgrimage route within the territories of the Archdioceses of Palermo, Monreale, Agrigento, and the Greek-Albanian Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi. The multimedia exhibition route accompanies the pilgrim or tourist in discovering often hidden or little-known places, rich in culture and identity, traditions and local products, in full respect of the environment through protected natural areas such as Monte Cammarata, Monte Carcaci, Monti di Palazzo Adriano, and Valle del Sosio, among others. An experience to be lived slowly, in order to grasp every detail of the route.”
“We are pleased,” said Susanna Gristina, president of Kòrai, “with the fundamental intervention of the Cultural Heritage department and the synergy with the Southern Development Agency, which represents a significant step in the cultural infrastructure of the route for better enjoyment. The initiative crowns the great effort made so far to preserve, protect, enhance, and promote the identity, cultural, and environmental heritage, both material and immaterial, of the territories and villages of the route. We hope to continue this effective collaboration to make the Itinerarium Rosaliae a new attraction for our Sicily, an effective tool for cultural, social, and economic development for the villages that are part of it.”
