Messina: one conviction and three acquittals for former Ngi ships still seized.
The article discusses a court sentence regarding deficiencies in the former NGi ships that provided maritime connections to and from the islands of Sicily. The former administrator of NGi, Sergio La Cava, was sentenced to two years (suspended sentence), while Vincenzo Franza, president of Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori, Edoardo Bonanno, CEO, and Luigi Genghi, director and administrator of the former NGi, were acquitted. The Caronte company received a fine of 70,000 euros and a one-year ban from contracting with the public administration. The accusation was related to alleged fraud in a maritime transport tender issued by the Region in 2015, which resulted in the seizure of three ships due to structural and safety deficiencies. The former NGi was later absorbed by Caronte & Tourist. Currently, four ships, including the “Nerea”, are still seized, causing daily disruptions in maritime connections to the Aeolian Islands. The four mayors of the Aeolian Islands have addressed the issue to President Renato Schifani.
