Mayor of Pantelleria: “Only Mameli’s anthem is inclusive”

The mayor of Pantelleria, Fabrizio D’Ancona, believes that the Mameli hymn is the only one that is totally inclusive and representative of national unity and constitutional values, achieved at a heavy cost in terms of sacrifices and human lives. This statement comes after the controversies raised by the National Partisans Association (Anpi) over the decision of the municipal administration to “censor the hymn of the Italian Resistance, Bella Ciao, for the celebrations of April 25th, Liberation Day.”

D’Ancona clarifies that his administration did not intend to erase a part of Italian history, nor did they forget those who sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom, autonomy, and independence. He further reflects on the significance of Liberation Day, emphasizing the need for unity and concord in Italy.

He explains the historical context of April 25th, 1945, marking the end of World War II, Nazi occupation, fascist regime, anti-Jewish persecutions, bombings, and loss that plagued the nation for a long time. Despite the joy of freedom, he acknowledges the continuation of a civil war and ongoing violence in some regions, as well as the subsequent exodus of Italians from Istria, Fiume, and Dalmatia.

D’Ancona stresses the importance of remembering and thanking those who fought for the birth of the present-day Italy, leading to the establishment of a democratic, liberal, and strong republic. He highlights the values enshrined in the Constitution as essential to Italian society today.

The mayor expresses the municipality’s decision to commemorate all those who died due to past atrocities and honor those who fought for a new Italy, emphasizing inclusivity and overcoming past divisions. He defends the choice to play only the Mameli hymn during the ceremony, stating that it unites all Italians, victors, and vanquished, without distinction. The decision was made to uphold democratic principles and values, without censoring anyone.
