Mattarella surpasses Napolitano and celebrates new record at Colle in Portugal

Sergio Mattarella has become the longest-serving president of the Republic, surpassing Giorgio Napolitano with 3167 days in office. Despite this achievement, Mattarella is currently attending a summit in Porto with non-executive heads of state from the European Union, rather than celebrating his record. Meanwhile, EU leaders gather in Granada for an informal council meeting, where they will discuss a reform of the stability pact that Italy is anxiously awaiting as it impacts the construction of the budget law. The discussions in Porto will focus on topics such as the conflict in Ukraine, the 2024 European elections, and the migration crisis. The Arraiolos format of the summit allows for more open and fluid dialogue, enabling even leaders from more uncompromising countries like Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia to express freer and more moderate positions. Mattarella is part of the Arraiolos Group, which includes heads of state from various EU countries. The summit will address topics such as the situation in Ukraine and the challenges facing the EU leading up to the next parliamentary elections. At the end of the two-day meetings, the presidents will give statements to the press summarizing the discussions.
