Mattarella: “Migrants are a global problem and the Dublin agreement is outdated”
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has referred to the Dublin regulations on migration as “prehistoric” and “anachronistic.” These regulations state that the country of first arrival is responsible for dealing with migrants, a system that no longer makes sense, not just for Italy. Mattarella made these comments during a press conference in Piazza Armerina, where he had visited a reception center with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Mattarella stressed the need for integration programs in migrants’ home countries to improve their lives and reduce the need for migration. He also criticized the EU’s approach to migration, calling for a long-term vision and solutions at the European level. Mattarella and Steinmeier emphasized the strong friendship and collaboration between Italy and Germany on migration issues.
