According to lawyer Adriana Vella, defense counsel for Matteo Messina Denaro, the actual role that Messina Denaro played within the Trapani mafia is uncertain, based on the statements of collaborators and irrevocable sentences obtained in the trial investigation. Vella argued that there is a lack of serious and consistent circumstantial evidence regarding Messina Denaro’s involvement in the meetings where the terrorist plan was decided. She also stated that there is no evidence that he provided manpower, explosives, or logistical support for the attacks. Vella concluded her defense by calling for Messina Denaro’s acquittal. This statement was made during the four-hour closing argument in the trial where Messina Denaro is accused of being the mastermind behind the 1992 bombings.
