Lipari celebrates anti-fascism by remembering the confinees on the island: a journey to commemorate

On April 25th, the anniversary of the Liberation was celebrated in Lipari, between memory, future, and places. The event, inspired by the historical places, started in Marina Corta and retraced the steps of the anti-fascists who were confined on the island. The Centro Studi Eoliano collaborated with local associations, such as the Magazzino del Mutuo Soccorso and Villa Santa Lucia, as well as the Isa Conti Eller Vainicher Institute directed by Tommasa Basile.

The route followed the most significant locations of the anti-fascist confinement period. It started in Marina Corta, where the confined arrived and left, passed through Salita San Giuseppe, and continued through the streets of Maddalena, S. Anna, and Ponte. These were the places of the famous escape of Fausto Nitti, Carlo Rosselli, and Emilio Lussu, the island’s border with the fascist guards’ lookout posts and barracks, and the homes of many confinees in Lipari, ending in the historic center at Piazza Matteotti.

At Villa Santa Lucia, a conference by Giuseppe “Pino” La Greca titled “Eolians, partisans, prisoners, martyrs” was held to honor the memory of those times. Through images from the period, the conditions of Lipari in 1943 and the dramatic events until 1946 were recounted, along with the personal stories of some young Eolians who participated in the partisan struggle.

The memories of those captured by the Germans after September 8th and sent to concentration camps for forced labor, as well as those who survived to tell their stories (such as Giuseppe Mollica, Vito De Vita, Giuseppe Iacolino, and Vittorio Brundu), were shared, as well as the tragic deaths of six young Eolians (4 from Lipari and 2 from Malfa) in Nazi concentration camps. The story of a young Eolian who died in the foibe in Slovenia was also recounted.

Looking towards the future, the conference was also attended by new generations in the auditorium of the Isa Vaincher Conti Technical Institute.
