Licata deals with the flooding of the Salso River, even volunteers help clean up the mud

In Licata, in the province of Agrigento, where the sun is shining again today, people continue to shovel mud and will do so for at least a couple of days after the Salso river overflowed in several points yesterday. The mouth of the river, during the flood, reached a height of about 8 meters and today it has lowered to 2 meters, returning to its bed.

The main critical area is the fruit and vegetable market in Via Giarretta, which is completely flooded. Two mechanical means and four pumps are in action to drain water and mud. In addition to Civil Protection personnel, municipal employees, and many volunteers, the owners of the fruit and vegetable warehouses are also working. The mayor of the city, Angelo Balsamo, is also present.

Civil Protection, workers, volunteers, and citizens, using drainage equipment, worked throughout the night and until 6 am on Corso Serrovia, the road that connects the seaside area to the rest of the city. Now, the same teams have moved to Corso Umberto II and Via Giarretta. The mechanical shovels are removing most of the mud, then sand will be thrown to consolidate the remaining mud and the streets will be washed. The citizens, in great difficulty, are aware that it will take days before they can return to normality.

A race against time is underway to reopen schools. Mechanical shovels, workers, and volunteers are trying to quickly clean up the neighborhoods where schools are located in Licata. The objective is not to lose school days for students. However, there is still no certainty that they will be able to return to school tomorrow.

“Last night we worked on Corso Serrovira, around the high school and other schools – explains Mayor Angelo Balsamo – . We continue to do so and hope to clean up everything by early evening. We have another 8 hours available. We will decide in the evening.”

The mayor of Licata has requested a state of emergency for the damage caused by the bad weather. A Licata agricultural entrepreneur expresses anger at the Salso river overflowing. The mayor, Angelo Balsamo, is in constant contact with the Region and has already requested the recognition of a state of natural disaster due to the significant damage.
