Lampedusa embraces Maria, born on island where no one is born: will be honorary citizen.
On Saturday, honorary citizenship will be conferred by Mayor Filippo Mannino (pictured) to the child – the first born in Lampedusa in 51 years – who was born on July 31, 2021. The small Maria, 2 and a half years old, who now lives in Piana degli Albanesi with her parents, will also have a playground named after her in via Roma. Also present will be Vice Prefect Carmen Cosentino for the Department of Civil Liberties and Immigration.
Maria was born in the outpatient clinic of the Emergency Territorial Point (Pte). Rita, a 38-year-old Ivorian woman, already a mother of two twins, was part of the group of migrants rescued and landed shortly before at the Favarolo pier. The woman, at the end of her pregnancy, was taken as a precaution to the outpatient clinic. At the Pte, the woman began labor and it was not possible to transfer her by helicopter. Maria Raimondo, a nurse from Corleone working at the outpatient clinic in Lampedusa, assisted and supported her, from whom the little girl took her name.
