Group rape in Palermo: defendants waive abbreviated trial

The trial of the six Palermo boys accused of raping a 19-year-old girl at the Foro Italico last July will proceed with the ordinary procedure. The defendants had requested admission to the abbreviated procedure, conditioning the request on a series of new activities including the victim’s examination in court, which the judge rejected. The 19-year-old had already been heard by the investigating judge Clelia Maltese in a probative incident two and a half months ago. The judge did decide to grant the request for a technical examination of the girl’s phone, but the defense lawyers still opted for a full trial instead of the abbreviated procedure.
