Francesco Tomasello, Rector of Kore, awarded the Chirone Prize
Today, the prestigious Chirone 2024 National Award will be conferred to Professor Francesco Tomasello, Chancellor of the Kore University of Enna. The award ceremony will take place during the opening day of the congress “From Management to Artificial Intelligence: How to govern processes and new technologies in radiology”, which will be held in Enna from today until Saturday. The Colajanni hall of the Kore University will host the inaugural ceremony scheduled for 5 pm. Several academic and institutional personalities will participate, including the Mayor of Enna, the Chancellor of the Kore University, and the Chancellor of the University of Palermo.
Following the awarding of the Chirone prize to Chancellor Tomasello, Professor Adelfio Elio Cardinale will deliver a keynote address on “Technocracy and medical humanities”. The congress is part of the 48th meeting of the regional group of the Italian Society of Medical Radiology, and one of the main themes will focus on managing processes and new technologies in radiology, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence.
The Chirone Award, named after the wise centaur Chirone, who in Greek mythology passed on the medical knowledge to Asclepius, the god of medicine, is awarded annually by the Italian Society of the History of Medicine, although it had been suspended in recent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The winner is chosen by a high-level medical committee: Professor Cardinale, President of Sism; Professor Silvio Garattini, President of the Mario Negri Institute; Professor Eugenio Gaudio, President of the Roma-Sapienza Foundation; Professor Alberto Mantovani, Scientific Director of Humanitas; and Professor Giovanni Simonetti, Emeritus of the University Roma Tor Vergata.
The award is given to Professor Tomasello, whose exceptional curriculum includes fundamental research in the biomedical field and international collaborations, for having “distinguished himself – as the motivation reads – nationally and internationally in cerebral revascularization; he conducted research on the molecular mechanisms that modulate the carcinogenesis of brain tumors; he implemented an innovative minimally invasive surgical technique for neuro-vascular conflicts causing trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
Franco Tomasello understood the mission of Universities as places of dialogue and cultural encounters. He has been a recognized leader in the academic field and in the scientific community, for his strong roots in scientific investigation capabilities. He has been a capable guide in combining a multidisciplinary approach necessary for renewal, thus proving to be a connector and an aggregator.”
