Fontana brothers sentenced to 11 and 10 years: bosses of Acquasanta clan in Palermo Mafia

After a long deliberation, the Court of Appeal of Palermo, overturning the first instance judgment, sentenced the brothers Giovanni and Gaetano Fontana to 11 and 10 years respectively for mafia association. According to investigators, they would have “inherited” the leadership of the Acquasanta mafia district from their deceased father, boss Stefano Fontana. On the other hand, the acquittal of the third brother, Angelo, was confirmed. The trial stemmed from a Finance Department raid in 2020 that led to 89 arrests. The other defendants, bosses, henchmen, and extortionists of Cosa Nostra, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 8 months to 12 years. Twenty-eight defendants were acquitted.
