First of five at-risk trees removed on Via Libertà in Palermo

Five sick trees along Via Libertà in Palermo, Italy, are at risk of collapsing and have to be removed. The trees, which decorate one of the city’s most important streets, pose a danger to public safety. The removal operations started this morning, with the workers first targeting a plane tree in front of a luxury fashion store. The tree was stripped of its branches and will be replaced by a younger and stronger tree of the same kind. The city administration is conducting a wider operation to identify and remove trees at the end of their lifespan. The work is being carried out by Reset and Villa e Giardini, two municipal companies. The dedicated lane in the direction of Piazza Vittorio Veneto has been temporarily closed to allow the workers to operate. Over the next few days, the workers will remove the other four plane trees that have reached the end of their lifespan.
