First hospital oasis in Palermo: Di Cristina becomes greener.

The first oasis in a hospital has been inaugurated in collaboration with WWF and the Di Cristina hospital in Palermo. The new natural space has been created at the Di Cristina hospital. It is an accessible and barrier-free area that will allow young patients, especially those with long hospital stays, to connect with nature during their rehabilitation journeys and to promote moments of tranquility and socialization among young patients and their families. The green area covers approximately 290 square meters and includes trees, a microhabitat with a butterfly garden, hedges, a small water feature, aromatic plants, a sensory path, birdhouses and bird feeders, and insect hotels.

The Mediterranean garden, enriched with a wide variety of typical Mediterranean shrubs, features seating made of wooden logs and educational panels. The placement of an olfactory box containing fragrances of flowers and medicinal species encourages children to recognize the wonders of nature through the sense of smell alone. These are some of the elements of the first Oasis in the Hospital that WWF has created in Italy, thanks to an important fundraising project launched with the Urban Nature edition “Nature Heals,” to provide interventions aimed at creating miniature oases to be gifted to hospital facilities. The inauguration took place in the presence of Walter Messina, Special Commissioner of the Arnas Civico Di Cristina Benfratelli, Nicoletta Salviato, head of the health education and promotion unit; Major Vincenzo Giordano of the Palermo finance guard, Marco Galaverni, director of Oasis, education, and activation of WWF Italy, and representatives of WWF Sicily such as regional delegate Pietro Ciulla.
