Fire on Excelsior Gnv ship from Palermo, engines off for hours

A fire broke out on the Gnv Excelsior ferry from Palermo to Genoa with 493 passengers and 89 crew members on board. The crew managed to extinguish the flames, but the ship had to shut down its engines for rescue operations. After several hours, the ferry resumed its journey escorted by another Gnv ship, the Splendid. The ferry is now heading to Naples and is expected to arrive at 5:30 pm. Authorities will determine whether to continue to Genoa or transfer passengers and vehicles to another vessel. The rescue operations were coordinated by the port authority in Palermo.
