Eye drops made from umbilical cord blood, from Sciacca to Milan, 300 doses to regenerate damaged retinas

Explain in brief the following article:

A clinical research project funded by the Pnrr for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases, the Ophthalmology department of the Policlinico in Milan has requested the supply of three hundred doses of eye drops for the regeneration of damaged retinas from the Umbilical Cord Blood Bank in Sciacca. The eye drops are produced by the hospital unit of Giovanni Paolo II in Sciacca using a portion of cord blood collected from donations made by mothers during childbirth.

“We are delighted to have been chosen by Maggiore Hospital for this purpose,” says Pasquale Gallerano, director of Transfusion Medicine at the hospital in Sciacca, which includes the cord bank in Sciacca. Cord blood, which was previously used only for stem cell transplants or neonatal transfusions for very low birth weight babies, can now also be used for creating gels for regenerating damaged tissues or, in this case, eye drops for treating eye diseases.

This is a new success in stem cell research for a cord blood bank like the one in Sciacca, connected to the National Transplant Center, the National Blood Center, and the national registry Ibmdr of the Galliera Hospital in Genoa. Periodically, cord blood units specifically intended for stem cell transplants in patients with leukemia or other blood disorders are sent from “Giovanni Paolo II” to various countries around the world.
