Explosion of car bomb in Siracusa’s Ortigia parking lot sparks fear among residents and tourists

An explosive device was detonated against a bench in the Talete parking lot in Ortigia, in the historic center of Syracuse, while there were some tourists present. According to the testimony of a security guard, the device was thrown by a young man, who was accompanied by another boy, and had another explosive device ready to be thrown in his hand, but when they realized they had been seen, they fled on a scooter.

The explosion was heard in several areas of the city and shortly after, police officers arrived to start an investigation to identify the perpetrators. Also present at the scene was the assessor for the Municipal Police of Siracusa, former world pole vault champion, Giuseppe Gibilisco. “I am speechless, once again – says Gibilisco – public property has been damaged. I am very sorry for the tourists who were there, some of whom were crying out of fear.”
