Elderly man reported for fire on Mount Inici, Castellammare
An elderly man, aged 75, accidentally sparked a fire on Mount Inici in Castellammare while trying to clear his land of scrub. The fire destroyed about 130 hectares of Mediterranean vegetation. The Forest Service officers intervened on the scene and reported the man for negligent arson. According to the reconstruction, the flames originated from his land in the Piano Principe – Gagliardetta area, where he was burning dry leaves and shrubs. The fire then spread rapidly, devastating Mount Inici. The fire, which broke out on May 7, spread in two directions towards the Firriato area and Vaccheria in the southern part of the mountain overlooking Castellammare. It seemed to be extinguished by 8 pm after a 9-hour firefighting operation, but it reignited during the night and was finally extinguished on May 8.
