Easter Exodus: Red alert traffic heading to Sicily

The article explains that Sicily will be one of the main tourist destinations during Easter holidays, leading to heavy traffic on the roads. The Anas, in order to ensure better traffic flow and prevent congestion, has decided to remove 404 construction sites (63% of the total) and optimize the remaining 242 sites with alternative routes for critical sections. The increased surveillance and presence of staff will be guaranteed during the holidays, as there will be an increase in traffic throughout the country. It is estimated that four million people will be traveling for the holidays, with a total of 32 million transits recorded by Anas sensors along the roads. Traffic is expected to increase by about 15% on Thursday, March 28, and by about 5% on Friday, March 29, compared to the average weekly traffic. The most popular tourist destinations continue to be Tuscany, Puglia, Campania, and Sicily.

Starting from Saturday, March 30, traffic will decrease by -4% to -8%, and on Easter Sunday, it is expected to decrease by -7% to -9%. Traffic reduction is also expected on Easter Monday, April 1, with variations of around -4% compared to a typical workday. Short-distance trips to tourist destinations are expected to increase on Easter Monday.

Traffic towards major cities will increase starting from Tuesday, April 2, with the major routes affected being the Grande Raccordo Anulare and the A91 Roma-Fiumicino in Lazio, the state road 36 del Lago di Como e dello Spluga in Milan, and the Raccordo Autostradale 10 Torino-Caselle in Turin. Intense flows are expected on the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo, the state road 1 Via Aurelia, the state road 675 Umbro-Laziale, the state road 3 bis Tiberina, the state road 16 Adriatica between Puglia and Veneto, and the state road 7 Quater Domitiana in Campania.

To facilitate travel, heavy vehicle traffic will be suspended on certain days and times. Anas will have 2,050 staff members, technical and operational personnel, along with 230 units from the Operational and National Situation Rooms to monitor traffic in real-time 24/7.
