Corruption investigation: house arrest revoked for ex-mayor Lo Biundo, residence requirement imposed

The Tribunal of Review in Palermo has revoked the house arrest of former mayor of Partinico Salvo Lo Biundo, who was involved in an investigation regarding a scheme of bribes to secure contracts for the cooperative Nido d’argento. Lo Biundo, represented by lawyer Nino Zanghì, has been ordered to stay in Partinico. Within 45 days, the reasons for this decision will be provided. The investigation by the Carabinieri of Partinico has led to the issuance of 12 precautionary measures by the investigating judge. The investigation focuses on the cooperative and the alleged favors granted to politicians and public officials for the assignment of contracts in various municipalities in western Sicily and also in the area of Gela.

In recent days, the judge had granted house arrest to Gaetano Di Giovanni, commander of the municipal police and chief of staff to the mayor of Agrigento Francesco Miccichè, who was also arrested in the same operation on charges of corruption. Di Giovanni, 59 years old, at the time of the events, namely in the summer of 2021, was the director of the socio-sanitary district of Agrigento and is accused of favoring the assignment of home care services for elderly non-self-sufficient individuals to the company Medea and the assignment of social assistance services in the municipalities of Santa Elisabetta and Agrigento to the Nido d’Argento cooperative, receiving a bribe of 7,500 euros from the company representatives.
