Coni and prosecutors of Palermo and Messina unite against sexual violence

A close collaboration between judicial offices and timely information from the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport on investigations into violence and sexual abuse against members of a national sports federation or a sports discipline recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI): is one of the objectives of the memorandum of understanding that will be signed on Thursday 8 February between the Prosecutor’s Office of Palermo, CONI, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport, and between the Prosecutor’s Office of Messina, CONI, and the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport.

At the center of the agreement is a greater protection of victims from possible reiterations of crimes. The protocol will be signed in the office of the prosecutor of Palermo, Maurizio de Lucia, in the presence of CONI President Giovanni Malagò, and the General Prosecutor of Sport Ugo Taucer.

Also attending will be the president of the Court of Appeals, Matteo Frasca, the general prosecutor of Palermo, Lia Sava, and for the Prosecutor’s Office of Messina, the deputy Vito Di Giorgio. The agreement provides that the prosecutor promptly inform the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport, providing it with all the information, of investigations for sexual violence or abuse that are no longer covered by confidentiality and involve a member of a National Sports Federation or associated sports discipline recognized by CONI, regardless of the context, even extra-sporting, in which the crime may have occurred.

Furthermore, the prosecutor can request information from the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport on the role, activities carried out, and any pending or completed disciplinary proceedings involving the suspects. The General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport, after receiving the requests from the prosecutors, promptly informs the federal prosecutor of the national sports federation or associated sports discipline competent for opening a disciplinary procedure.

In addition, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Sport, in case of a request for information from the prosecutor, commits to providing all relevant information and may request authorization to extract the certificate of reports of the offense concerning the member or affiliate under investigation.
