Complex surgery at Policlinico di Palermo: A 24kg peritoneal liposarcoma removed.

At the “Paolo Giaccone” Polyclinic in Palermo, a complex surgical operation was performed to remove a 24.10 kg peritoneal liposarcoma. The four-hour operation was carried out by a team led by Professor Antonino Agrusa, head of the Laparoscopic Surgery department. The liposarcoma, a rare tumor of adipose tissue, was compressing several vital organs in the patient’s abdomen. Thanks to meticulous planning and the use of advanced technologies, the surgeons were able to remove the tumor without compromising any vital organs.

The tumor mass had infiltrated several organs, requiring the removal of the left kidney, adrenal gland, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, jejunum-ileum, appendix, and omentum in one piece. The 51-year-old patient had a regular postoperative course and will be discharged in the coming days to start chemotherapy in the Medical Oncology department.

“This was a highly complex case,” explains Agrusa, “which required a preparatory phase with multidisciplinary treatment involving internists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and oncologists. We are proud to say that the operation was a success and the patient is now in the recovery phase. It is a great testament to the capabilities of our team and the technology we have at our disposal. I thank everyone for their commitment and teamwork, especially Professor Giuseppe Badalamenti, Professor Maurizio Raineri, and Dr. Antonio Gallina, the residents, and all the nurses in the ward and operating room who, as always, have demonstrated high professionalism and competence.” The case will be the subject of a scientific publication that Agrusa and his colleagues are already working on.
