Catania: Memorial Mass for Mussolini Cancelled, Archbishop Closes Church for Two Days

The obituary with the word “anniversary” and below “Tricolor Flame remembers Benito Mussolini” with an appointment for a religious celebration scheduled for today, April 28, at 7pm did not go unnoticed by the Catania Curia. “The Holy Mass in the church of Santa Caterina in Catania, to remember Benito Mussolini, has been cancelled,” decided Archbishop Luigi Renna who also ordered the closure of the church this afternoon until tomorrow, April 29.

“The decision is motivated by Monsignor Renna to avoid inappropriate ideological expressions that in the recent past have had unpleasant precedents,” reads a note from the Archdiocese of Etna. Today marks the anniversary of Mussolini’s death, which occurred on April 28, 1945 in Giulino, a fraction of the municipality of Mezzegra (now Tremezzina), in the province of Como, where the founder of fascism was shot dead along with his lover Clara Petacci.

The case has a precedent in 2016. Above we publish a frame from a video acquired by the Digos of the Catania Police Headquarters in 2016, posted on the Meridionews website, in which the mass celebrated on April 28, 2016 in suffrage for the death of Benito Mussolini is captured, accompanied by three fascist salutes. In the footage, several dozen people were seen at the conclusion of the service standing at attention and responding three times “present” to loud incitements shouted by a man wearing a black shirt and jacket: “For the leader of Italy Benito Mussolini,” “For the fallen of the Social Republic,” “For all fascist martyrs.”
