Catania bank robbery attempt foiled, man arrested as people escape
Attempted robbery this morning at the Unicredit bank offices on Viale Ruggero di Lauria, near Piazza Nettuno. At opening time, a man, with his face uncovered, entered the credit institute brandishing a gun and threatening everyone present. At that point, the bank manager intervened explaining to the man that the safe where the money was kept could not be opened immediately. Modern systems, in fact, do not allow for autonomous opening whenever desired.
When the bank manager explained to the thief that it would take some time, the people inside, visibly shaken, managed to escape and, after sounding the alarm, the police cars arrived on the scene and caught the man still inside the bank. The weapon, a gun, turned out to be a toy.
The officers then took the bank manager to the police station to file a report.
