Catania: Another attack in emergency room – Nurse at San Marco hospital punched

“A nurse working in the emergency room of San Marco Hospital in Catania was attacked by a patient who, in a state of agitation while waiting for treatment, punched him. Assisted by colleagues, he was treated and judged to recover in three days. The Nursind union reports that ‘the incident did not have serious consequences, but once again highlights the seriousness of the situation in the front lines of the healthcare system.’

‘We express our utmost solidarity with the colleague who was the victim of this unacceptable aggression,’ says Salvatore Vaccaro, territorial secretary of Nursind Catani. ‘Unfortunately, we continue to witness an escalation of violence against healthcare personnel, particularly in emergency rooms. We ask the Policlinico San Marco company to firmly enforce the new regulations against hospital aggressions, hoping that they can serve as a deterrent.’

The union hopes for ‘the automatic prosecutability provided for by the regulations’ and emphasizes how ‘the issue of violence against healthcare workers is not only a public order issue, but also the result of structural deficiencies in the system.”
