Casamonica wins in Palermo: is the new Italian super lightweight boxing champion

Armando Casamonica, the boxer from Quadraro in Rome, is the new Italian super lightweight champion. He won the title, which was vacant, late last night in a highly spectacular match at the Cus Palermo sports facility, defeating Gianluca Picardi from Campania unanimously on points.

The match consisted of ten high-intensity rounds by both boxers, with Casamonica playing the role of aggressive boxer, often anticipating Picardi’s left with excellent timing. Picardi, on the other hand, maintained a composed and precise boxing style, striking often on the counter and responding determinedly in close exchanges.

After the first six evenly matched rounds, Casamonica managed to maintain a high volume of actions and successful hits, which impressed the judges and earned him the victory with scores of 96-94, 97-93, 96-94, making him the new Italian super lightweight champion.

“We studied the match beforehand,” his words immediately after the victory. “We knew we were facing a tough and combative opponent, so I strategized every moment, even when pushing myself to the limit, because I knew that with Picardi, even a single blow could make the difference to my disadvantage. Becoming the Italian champion was a goal my coach and I had set since I was a schoolboy, and now it’s wonderful to have the belt around my waist.”
