Carini mayor considers closing via Sturzo bridge after accident

After the serious accident on Monday, April 15, involving a truck and two cars, the mayor of Carini is considering closing the bridge connecting via Luigi Sturzo with the roundabout of the Poseidon shopping center. In that stretch, safety interventions are planned, as similar incidents have occurred in the past, with even worse consequences. Mayor Giovì Monteleone asks the Region for precise indications on the tender for the works and does not exclude making the area off-limits in the meantime, considered now dangerous: the truck broke through the guardrail and remained suspended on the bridge, and two of the five injured persons were taken to the hospital with a red code.
“The incident has led me to reflect and consider the possibility of interrupting the circulation of vehicles on the bridge. For this reason, I have instructed the heads of the relevant offices to verify if there are safety conditions to ensure the safety of vehicles and people and to suggest to this administration, following a joint inspection, any measures to be taken, including the possible closure of the road to vehicular traffic, where there have also been fatal accidents in the past.”
The mayor thus urges the Region: “About seven months ago, regional councilor Edy Tamajo announced an eight million euro intervention, to be put out to tender by last December, for the redevelopment of the Carini industrial area. On that occasion, it was also explained that among the roads to be intervened in the industrial area is via Don Luigi Sturzo. The planned works also include the construction of roundabouts, median barriers with new jersey barriers, resurfacing of the road surface, expansion joints, viaducts, road protection barriers and protection nets, and further maintenance of sidewalks, road drains, and infrastructure works, and finally, the installation of road signage, horizontal and vertical, and the completion of the street lighting and video surveillance system that the Municipality has taken over assuming the burden.”
“Since then, silence. We urge the Region to follow up on that announcement by providing precise indications on the tender,” Monteleone continues. “Furthermore, the connections between the industrial and commercial area of Carini with the airport and the port of Palermo rely solely on the Palermo-Mazara motorway, built eighty years ago, and are obsolete. This is why I ask for a technical-political table with the Region to design a new system of connections, up to date and capable of managing the area’s traffic.”
