Butera, the municipality auctions off the Guttadauro village

The municipal administration of Butera, in the province of Caltanissetta, has put Borgo Guttadauro, in the Disueri district, up for auction, not far from the dam of the same name, along the road of the sulfur mines. We are in the plain between Gela and Niscemi, an area of estates and sulfur mines, in a small village of just over four thousand inhabitants. Mayor Giovanni Zuccalà has set a base price of 716 thousand euros and there is time until April 26, 2024 to submit an offer. The village, owned by the Municipality of Butera since 1971, is now referred to as a ghost town. The opening of the bids will take place on April 29 at 10 am.

Borgo Guttadauro was built in 1940, the hamlet was part of the rural settlements of the fascist period, established by King Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy. It had a somewhat troubled history before becoming the property of the Municipality of Butera and then being definitively abandoned in the mid-1980s. It was part of the project of the reclamation consortium of the Plain of Gela, which planned the construction of eight rural settlements, wanted by King Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy. The village has a central square around which stand a church with a bell tower and the other social structures, such as the school, the barracks of the Royal Carabinieri, the post office, the medical assistance department, the granary, warehouses, a store, the House of Fascism, workshops for artisans, and more.

In June 2020, the then President of the Region, Nello Musumeci, had announced that the restoration of the village was on the agenda among the initiatives for the redevelopment of Sicily’s architectural and historical heritage.
