Bayesian sues for over 200 million euros related to image damages from shipwreck

The builders of the Bayesian are seeking a maximum compensation from the owner. An indemnity of 222 million euros for the sinking of the British-flagged yacht that sank off the port of Porticello on the morning of August 19, causing the death of seven people, including British tycoon Mike Lynch.

The Italian Sea Group, led by entrepreneur Giovanni Costantino, who in 2021 acquired the Perini Navi brand saving it from bankruptcy, is making the request. The company, listed on the stock exchange, now owns the assets of the Viareggio shipyard, which built the 56-meter long sailboat with a 75-meter aluminum main mast in 2008, the tallest of its kind in the world.

The Tisg group has appointed the law firm BdPmarine&law, represented by lawyer Tommaso Bertuccelli, to initiate legal action in the Termini Imerese Court, asking for just over 222 million euros for image damages related to the sinking of the high-value yacht, described until then as unsinkable.

Also implicated are Revtom Limited based in the Isle of Man, formally administered by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s widow, representing the owner and owner of the Bayesian, responsible under navigation code for damages caused by the crew, and the global luxury yachting operators, Camper & Nicholsons International, who were tasked with managing the vessel, and allegedly selected a captain not suited to handle such a technologically advanced yacht.

Also named in the lawsuit are the three crew members investigated by the Prosecutor for multiple negligent manslaughter and negligent shipwreck, including New Zealand captain James Cutfield, chief engineer Tim Parker Eaton, and sailor Matthew Griffith who was on watch in the cockpit the night of the tragedy. The impact of the disaster not only involved the tragic loss of lives and the destruction of a boat considered one of the international “gems” of yachting, but also caused a damage to the image of the yacht’s construction company.
