An ark for the lizard of the Aeolian Islands, one of the most endangered species

In the Aeolian Islands, the Lizard Sanctuary is born. The “Life Eolizard” project is carried out by some researchers and aims to safeguard one of the most at-risk species in the Mediterranean, the Podarcis raffonei. The scientists plan to take some lizard specimens from nature, keep them safe at the Bioparco in Rome, let them reproduce, and then reintroduce them in the future to an environment where they can thrive again. The project, co-financed by the European Union’s Life program, involves collaboration from various institutions, including the universities of Roma Tre and L’Aquila, Triton Ets, and the National Research Council. They aim to establish two new populations on the islets of Bottaro and Lisca Bianca off Panarea, in order to create a true sanctuary for the lizard species.
