Boy dies during crossing to Lampedusa: victim of petrol fumes

An Egyptian boy died, presumably from benzene fumes, while aboard a migrant boat heading towards Lampedusa. The sea conditions were poor, and some migrants fell overboard during the journey. Panic ensued on the wooden boat, and many tried to rescue their fellow travelers. It was during these rescue attempts that a canister of gasoline spilled and seeped into the wood, killing the young Egyptian boy below deck. The coast guard military eventually rescued the group of refugees and found the young boy’s body. Clarity on what truly happened will only be possible once the survivors and rescuers arrive at the Favarolo dock.
