Palermo, long queues and inconveniences at the recently reopened Falcone-Borsellino airport.
#Palermo
The Falcone Borsellino airport, which was closed until 11am due to chaos caused by fires, has now reopened to traffic. However, the situation at the Palermo airport is still very inconvenient. Initially, departing flights were allowed, and all passengers who had been waiting for hours rushed to go through the police checks at the same time, as there were a higher number of flights than usual. This resulted in endless waiting times for the checks, and many people inevitably risked or even missed their flights. The operations are proceeding slowly in a situation of absolute emergency and unpredictability, caused by an exceptional situation.
The Gesap, the company that manages Falcone-Borsellino, has constantly informed passengers through social channels since 3am about the situation, suspended flights, connections, and the evolving emergency. They have been trying to responsibly manage the passenger traffic despite all the inconveniences that are beyond their control.
The first authorized flight to take off is flight AZ1768 to Milan Linate, which was scheduled for 6am and has already started the boarding process. Due to the airport closure, 24 out of the 233 flights planned for today have been cancelled so far, with 20 of them taken over by Catania airport after the fire on July 16th; the remaining 4 have been diverted to Trapani Birgi airport. Arriving flights have also been authorized, with the first plane landing coming from Orly.
