Drought: River Verdura water in Ribera flows into sea
Explain the following article briefly: At the mouth of the river Verdura, in the municipality of Ribera (Agrigento), a significant amount of water, accumulated thanks to recent rains, is dispersing inexorably into the sea. Meanwhile, the citrus orchards in the area have been without water for months, resulting in a harvest for 2024 that has been devastated and halved due to drought. Farmers in the area are calling for the Region to reactivate the Poggiodiana lifting plant and the connecting channel from the Gammauta dam to the Castello dam to redirect water for irrigation purposes. They are also seeking cooperation from Enel Green Power, which operates a hydroelectric plant at the Gammauta dam, to reserve water for agricultural use. The farmers’ requests come shortly after the approval of a €300,000 funding for the recovery of river flows in the Sosio-Verdura river, but the mayor believes that this alone is insufficient without intervention on the Poggiodiana plant and the Gammauta channel.
