Palermo airport in crisis after storm, Schifani raises concerns: “Need clarity on closure”
The Palermo airport is fully operational after being closed yesterday due to flooding, but the president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, has emphasized “the need to shed light on the problems that led to the closure of the airport, to avoid similar disruptions in the future.”
The president has also requested “a rapid restoration of the administrative governance, with the appointment of a CEO, and the technical governance, with the identification of a new general manager.” The Region “will continue to carefully monitor the situation to ensure the full efficiency of airport services and the safety of travelers.”
Yesterday evening, following the closure that required some flights to be redirected to Trapani airport, the Region intervened to ensure support for the travelers affected by the reroutings. “As soon as the president of Airgest, Salvatore Ombra – highlighted Schifani – reported to me the difficulties in managing the transfer of passengers from Trapani to Palermo, despite it not being our responsibility but that of the airlines, through the regional councilor for Infrastructure Alessandro Aricò we immediately activated procedures to coordinate support operations for the travelers. Thanks to the timely intervention on the Sicilian Transport Company, ten buses were made available to shuttle passengers between the two airports.” The service continued smoothly, with a continuous flow of buses, until 2am, ensuring the transfer of passengers to the “Falcone-Borsellino” airport or alternatively directly to Piazza Politeama.
