Open Arms, Lawyer Bongiorno’s Speech: “The rescue was not accidental, there was a pre-arranged handover”

The lawyer Giulia Bongiorno, defending Matteo Salvini in court, stated that the Open Arms NGO did not come across the migrant boat by chance, and that they had been given specific information before the Alarm Phone alert. Bongiorno also argued that the distress signal from the boat was exaggerated and that Malta had recognized the situation as not dangerous. She mentioned that the Tar ruling did not annul Salvini’s decree, but only required Italy to provide assistance, not necessarily allow the migrants to disembark. The lawyer emphasized that even though Italy did not have jurisdiction over the situation, they complied with the Tar ruling and continued to provide assistance to the Open Arms vessel. Bongiorno highlighted the political context at the time, with the government facing a crisis, which led to heightened attention on the Open Arms situation.
