Water crisis: Schifani responds to Musumeci, new plan with 130 interventions ready.
The Region, through the office of the Commissioner delegated to the emergency, has already started the second phase of the process to address the water crisis in Sicily. This was announced by the Presidency of the Region in reference to the statements made by the Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, during the question time at the Chamber of Deputies.
Musumeci stated that “the severe drought in Sicily is the result of a delay in planning and maintaining the infrastructure, which has been going on for decades.” He also mentioned that a draft plan for further measures requested by the Region and to be financed with State resources was examined on September 30 in two meetings, but has not yet been returned by the delegated commissioner Schifani. The regional Civil Protection manager provided a summary of the different actions and highlighted some priority measures that need to be taken.
In response, the Presidency of the Region highlighted that a proposal for a second intervention plan has already been sent to the national Civil Protection department, which includes over 130 projects developed in response to requests from Ato, water managers, and municipalities. In addition to this, there are over 200 repair interventions and the purchase of water tankers for municipalities totaling over €8 million, as stated by the Sicilian Region.
“This plan is currently being closely discussed with the competent offices of the Civil Protection in Rome, taking into account the observations from national authorities and recent feedback from municipalities and water managers. The updating process to ensure timely and effective interventions to address the severe drought in the region has been completed after numerous meetings with the ATI, the last of which was held yesterday, and is ready to be definitively sent to Rome.”
“The water crisis in Sicily is not only the result of severe drought but also of decades of delays in infrastructure maintenance and strategic planning,” said the Presidency of the Region. Despite this, the current regional government has taken concrete actions, thanks to the allocation of €20 million approved by the Council of Ministers last May to address the emergency. This was supplemented with €39 million from the regional budget, and another €40 million is expected in the budget variation bill already approved by the regional government and transmitted to the ARS for the completion of the legislative process. Efforts are ongoing to secure additional resources necessary to complete the interventions, in line with the priorities identified by the task force and the delegated commissioner, President of the Region Renato Schifani.”
