Femicide in Piedmont, Solero village in shock: “A normal couple like many others”
Don Mario Bianchi, the parish priest of Solero, was among the first to arrive in Solero, a town in the province of Alessandria, at the scene of the murder of Patrizia Russo, a support teacher at the middle school “Lucio Ferraris”. It was her husband, Giovanni Salamone, 63 years old, who called the police after stabbing his wife, 53 years old, to surrender and confess to the crime.
He confirmed the description of the couple involved in the bloodshed that shocked the small center of Alessandria. “They are friendly people – he says – I know them both because they regularly attended Sunday Mass.”
Don Mario, 46 years old, raised in a town not far from here, ordained a priest at a young age, has been the parish priest in Solero, in the church dedicated to San Perpetuo, since 2005. The priest recounted that shortly after six, the neighbors woke up because of the commotion of the rescue vehicles and the flashing lights of the carabinieri. “But no one heard suspicious noises,” he added.
“A normal couple like many others, who tried to integrate into the village by socializing with neighbors and attending the parish.” The mayor of Solero, Andrea Toniato, lives not far from the pink house that was the scene of this morning’s femicide at dawn, and describes Patrizia Russo and Giovanni Salamone in this way.
“I – he says – knew them by sight, but no one thought there could be an episode of this kind related to these two people.” No discomfort, no reports to social services. “No – the mayor reiterates – there was none of that, Patrizia was also well-liked by her colleagues and the students at the school, so absolutely nothing special in their family situation.”
