Environmentalists call for suspension of work on Madonie mountains telescope
The environmental associations Club Alpino Italiano, Legambiente, Lipu, and WWF have notified the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Palermo, the Madonie Park Authority, the Municipality of Petralia Sottana, the Civil Engineering Department of Palermo, and the regional Territorial and Environmental Department to suspend the works for the construction of the Astronomical Observatory on Mount Mufara, which were resumed a few days ago.
“In light of the judgement of the Sicilian Regional Administrative Court on September 24, which did not admit the appeal of the associations for procedural reasons and did not examine the numerous allegations of illegality raised – reads a statement – the project is subject to the environmental and landscape protection constraints and does not benefit from the derogatory regime stemming from the national law that came into force in August 2023.”
“On Mount Mufara – explain the associations – there is, among other things, an absolute ban on building, which led to the declaration of the project’s inadmissibility by the Superintendence on August 9, 2022, a ban that was not considered in the project’s assessment.”
A similar notice was sent to the Department of Rural Development of the Region and the Municipality of Petralia Sottana, as owners of the demesne forest and municipal areas subject to an absolute ban on building and affected by the works, and to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese.
