8,000 participants at Sicily Wine event in Palermo Botanical Garden

Eight thousand people attended the two open-to-the-public days of Wine Sicily at the Botanical Garden. The sixth edition of the event set a new attendance record. Among the paths of the University of Palermo’s Botanical Garden, wine enthusiasts and curious visitors discovered over 60 Sicilian wineries with 600 labels, immersed themselves in the aromatic notes of the grapevines, and tasted the new promises of wine. Today’s event was reserved for operators, B2B, and industry experts. The new project WinExpe.it was also presented, the first wine tourism portal created in Sicily which will be online from December 1st.

The fourth edition of the Wine Sicily Award was also held, judged by a panel of 10 wine bloggers from all over Italy, led by Ugo Cosentino (Grand Crew) and Ilaria Cappuccini, also known as Just.SayWine. The experts tasted one wine from each participating winery during a tour that visited the city’s main wine shops. Ultimately, the winner was announced upon reaching the event venue.

“The 2024 Wine Sicily Award went to Cantina Florio for their Marsala Vergine, reserve 2010,” explained Ugo Cosentino. “We are very pleased to have awarded this recognition to a Marsala, one of Sicily’s oldest wines that has never received the spotlight it deserves: a clean, easy yet complex wine, faithful to the history and tradition of this grape variety. This year, all participating wineries have shown a very high level of quality. As for the special Holiday Wine Award, dedicated to the perfect glass for special occasions, Tasca D’Almerita with their Rosso del Conte 2018 took the podium.”

This year, the event entirely dedicated to Sicilian wine received the endorsement of the Made in Italy Ministry. Throughout the days, there were tastings of wines from the best Sicilian wineries, as well as meetings, workshops, and a focus on wine in Sicily with industry specialists. The two masterclasses in collaboration with Le Vie dei Tesori were a huge success. There were also two talk sessions on Women in Wine – Sicily and Next Generation. The event also featured activities in collaboration with the Winesicily Offshoot.
