Alberto of Monaco in Palermo for the future of the Mediterranean: “Research knows no geopolitical boundaries”

In 1919, in Madrid, my great-grandfather Alberto I, surrounded by hydrologists, biologists, and other representatives of marine science, delivered his inaugural speech as the first president of our commission, stating that the science of the sea is just waiting to be mobilized to distribute many benefits to all peoples. Since then, and for over a century, Ciesm has promoted collaborative research beyond geopolitical boundaries. Prince Albert II of Monaco made these remarks during the opening of the 43rd congress of Ciesm (the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea) in Palermo, where 400 researchers from 23 countries are engaged. He emphasized the importance of bringing together thousands of marine scientists from all shores of the sea, with their diverse cultures, to advance the rich and diverse Mediterranean heritage. He thanked Palermo and all those involved in making the event happen, and highlighted the strong bond of friendship and collaboration between Sicily and the Principality of Monaco. The President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, Gaetano Galvagno, also spoke at the congress, expressing the importance of sharing vital knowledge for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea’s precious biodiversity, which is currently threatened by pollution and climate change. He is confident that the discussions during these days will lead to a future of increased sensitivity towards these issues.
