Mafia murder in Barrafranca, four life sentences annulled

The judges in Catania will be the ones to rule in the retrial for the murder of Filippo Marchì, who was assassinated on July 16, 2017 in Barrafranca in a mafia-style ambush. The Court of Cassation has overturned, with a retrial, the life sentence for the brothers Giovanni and Vincenzo Monachino, Vincenzo Di Calogero, and Gaetano Curatolo, and the 30-year sentence for Angelo Di Dio. The Monachino brothers were accused of being the masterminds. The first trial took place before the Court of Assizes in Caltanissetta and concluded in 2022.

The 3 and a half-year sentence for Giuseppe Di Marca and Vincenzo Monachino, who were also accused of a burglary at a supermarket where a safe containing around 15,000 euros was stolen, was instead overturned without a retrial. The Cassation has ordered the immediate release of Di Marca.
