Oldest resident of Marettimo dies at 101, known as “Zu Peppe”

The oldest resident of the island of Marettimo, Giuseppe Bevilacqua, has passed away at the age of 101 in the home of one of his children in Castellammare del Golfo. Known as “Zu Peppe” by the people of Marettimo and tourists alike, he was a living memory of the island’s history and traditions. During World War II, he was a prisoner in concentration camps before returning to Marettimo where his parents lived. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Prefect of Trapani. His body will return to Marettimo in the coming days for burial in the island’s cemetery.
