50 years later, Rossini’s Elisabetta returns to Palermo’s Massimo: Fogliani conducts, with Machaidze and Scala in the cast.
To close the 2023/24 opera season at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo from Tuesday, October 22 at 8pm until October 29, it is Elisabetta, Queen of England by Gioachino Rossini, a drama for music in two acts, with a libretto by Giovanni Schmidt, returning to Palermo after over fifty years. The production, directed by Davide Livermore, was created by the Teatro Massimo in collaboration with the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, where it was already performed with great success. Antonino Fogliani conducts the orchestra and choir of the Teatro Massimo, while Salvatore Punturo is the choir master. The cast includes great Rossini interpreters, starting with the protagonist, Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze debuting in the role of Elisabetta, and in the alternative cast, Japanese Aya Wakizono. Tenor Enea Scala, who had previously tackled the dramatic role of Norfolc, makes his debut as Leicester, with Mert Süngü as the alternative, while Ruzil Gatin and Alasdair Kent will play the antagonist Norfolc. Salome Jicia will play Matilde, with Veronica Marini in the second cast. Lastly, Rosa Bove will play the role of Enrico en travesti, and Francesco Lucii as Guglielmo. Assistant director Sax Nicosia and assistant music director Nicola Pascoli complete the team. The production features a team of seasoned creatives who work alongside the versatile Turin-born director Davide Livermore, contributing to his distinctive style and poetic vision. Giò Forma designed the sets, D-Wok created video designs to enhance the stage space, Gianluca Falaschi and Anna Verde designed the lavish costumes for the court of Elisabetta, and Nicolas Bovey created the lighting design.
