14 mayors from Nisseni march for the closure of State road 121 after 52 years

Denied viability: fourteen mayors from the Nisseno area protest on the state road 12 closed since 1972. Hydrogeological instability and mud accumulate year after year, now surpassing half a century. There are 14 kilometers that connect Santa Caterina Villarmeosa with Marianopoli, crucial for the entire Valley: they would allow faster access to the Five Arches Bridge and therefore to reach the highway.

The initiative was joined by, in addition to hundreds of citizens, also the mayors of 14 municipalities in the area. “We are here – emphasizes the mayor of Marianopoli Salvatore Noto – to represent an abandoned territory. It is not acceptable that this road, the only access to the Palermo – Catania highway, has been closed since October 13, 1972. From today, the abandonment must end.’

Residents often still venture along the state road to avoid long alternative routes, but when it rains the road becomes impassable due to mud and hydrological instability. Two years ago, Anas completed a construction site on the last four kilometers of the interrupted section but the other eight continue to be impassable for 52 years.
