Young inmate from Palermo hangs himself in Parma prison

A young man from Palermo, detained in the medium security wing of the Parma prison, took his own life yesterday evening (May 16), by hanging himself. This was reported by the Emilia Romagna guarantor for individuals deprived of their liberty, Roberto Cavalieri. The 25-year-old, originally from Palermo, had recently assaulted a prison officer and was subsequently transferred to a section for inmates with security issues. The Guarantor added that yesterday’s incident marks the second suicide in the Parma prison and the fourth in Emilia Romagna within the past 12 months. The number of suicides in prisons since the beginning of the year is now 34.
